Golf carts are relatively easy to care for and maintain, and it’s not difficult to find a used model in good condition. That being said, you don’t want to risk leaving the dealership with a model that’s going to break down in only a few years. To be sure you’re purchasing a well-cared for golf cart, you’ll need to read our helpful inspection tips below.

Check the Tires

Your golf cart’s tires can tell you a lot about its overall condition, and you’ll want to inspect them thoroughly. To start, take a look at the tread on each wheel. If it’s extremely worn down, or uneven from tire to tire, your model may not only need a realignment, but this may be a sign the cart hasn’t been well cared for in the past. If you notice a tire has been patched you may want to skip out on the sale.

Gas vs Electric

Gas and electric models will require you to inspect certain areas more closely. For example, if you have a used electric vehicle, you’ll want to pay close attention to the cart’s battery and electrical components. Check the battery poles for any signs of corrosion or leaking fluid, and be sure to ask your seller if it’s ever been replaced.

For gas-powered carts, you’ll need to grab a flashlight and open up the fuel tank. If you notice the fuel is dark, thick, or has a peculiar smell, this model has likely been neglected in the past. If you see any metal shavings in the fuel tank, it’s a sign the engine is on its last leg, and we advise you to choose a different model.

Vehicle History

While inspections are important for selecting a used golf cart in good condition, even the most thorough examinations won’t tell you everything you need to know about your model’s condition. To be sure you’re getting a used golf cart in good condition, we advise asking your salesperson for the vehicle’s history report. This should include a list of previous owners, the vehicle’s age and mileage, as well as any accidents or damage the vehicle has accumulated over the years.
